Director Of Organizing

Open New York

Open New York (ONY), a grassroots group advocating for abundant homes and lower rent is seeking a Director of Organizing. The Director of Organizing will be a member of ONY’s senior leadership team.

The Director of Organizing will work closely with the Executive Director and ONY Board to develop a strategy for organizational growth, with a mandate of diversifying the membership. Additionally, the Director of Organizing will develop processes for onboarding and cultivating relationships with members, as well as activating members to best support the goals and priorities of ONY.

The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of organizing strategies and techniques, a proven track record of working collaboratively as a member of a team, strong familiarity building organizing processes and metrics to track success, and an understanding of land-use processes and housing issues in New York City. 

The Director of Organizing will report directly to the Executive Director. 

Job responsibilities

  • In partnership with the Executive Director and ONY Board, develop a strategy for growing membership, with a mandate of diversifying the membership;
  • Develop processes for onboarding new members;
  • Identify strengths and skill sets of individual members to activate in ONY activities;
  • Work closely with the Executive Director, ONY Board and ONY staff to achieve the goals of ONY, including creating more housing in high opportunity neighborhoods;
  • Organize member turnout for hearings, meetings and external events;
  • Lead membership meetings, including developing membership meeting agendas in partnership with the ONY board and Executive Director, with goal of growing membership turnout;
  • Develop metrics to identify success and growth.

Job qualifications:

  • Four or more years of experience in an organizing role in one or more of the following types of organizations: city or state government, political and/or issue advocacy campaigns, labor unions, non-profit, policy or community organizations;
  • Experience working collaboratively at a senior level;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of NYC’s diverse neighborhoods and communities; 
  • Strong working knowledge of government agencies and processes, including community boards;
  • Understanding and ability to utilize modern technological tools for organizing and member management;
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships with key stakeholders and community groups
  • Ability to work well with communities with diverse interests and needs;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • The ability to work well under pressure and deadlines as well as prioritize tasks;
  • Literacy in Spanish or Chinese is a plus;
  • Data analysis and research skills a plus;
  • Experience managing constituent services is a plus;
  • A demonstrated commitment to the mission and values of Open New York.

Salary and benefits:

Salary commensurate with experience; between $75-85k per year. Healthcare plan is provided.
